The next few days could decide the outcome of this yearsJockeys Championship in the UK and thats before the season has even started!

Richard Hughes who is one of the favourites to becomeChampion Jockey this year could miss the first month of the season because of ariding ban imposed in India and if that ban is reciprocated in the UK then hischance of winning the coveted title will be virtually gone before its gotunder way!

Hughes was banned for 15 meetings under an Indian rule whichrequires jockeys to ride to instructions given by connections. The offence doesnot exist in Britain or Europe but normally Racings Governing Bodies mirrorsuspensions given in other countries.

If the British Horseracing Authority rubber stamp it then Hughes will not be able to ride againuntil April 30^th and that means he will miss over 4 weeks of the newseason and presumably stacks of winners.

I have watched Hughes mature into one of the worlds finestjockeys and horsemen and he hasnt achieved that by rigidly sticking to theorders given to him by connections in the parade ring before a race.

He has used his riding brain which in my humble opinion isone of the best riding brains in the world and this has helped him make splitsecond decisions during races that undoubtedly have helped him become one ofthe must successful riders on the planet.

He is also one of the very few jockeys I know that will holdhis hands up and admit to riding a poor race if he felt he got it wrong but topunish him-and its a very long ban- for not sticking to the instructions seemsto be way over the top.

Having ridden in a few races myself admittedly at a very lowlevel I know that things can happen so quickly in a race and even in youve got10 cameras watching it from every angle its still down to the man on board tomake that lightning fast decision.

Sometimes they get it wrong and thats when bans are handedout quite rightly by the stewards but to ban a guy for failing to ride toinstructions seems to me to be at least outdated!

If hes caused interference, used a dangerous manouvre, hita horse too many times or not tried hard enough to win then yes ban him but totake his livelihood away for such a long time for breaking a strange rule seemsvery harsh.

Of course some people might say rules are rules and if theyare broken you must accept the punishment but in this case I believe Hughes hasa right to ask the authorities in the UK for help.

I am not in any way undermining the racing authorities inIndia but perhaps on this occasion I would suggest a bit of common sense comesinto play or Hughes and the sport of Racing will be the loser!!
