Tommo looks ahead to Derby Day with a big outsider!!!
A classic winning favourite, a small field, stable and jockey in top form and the vibes are good yes its all pointing to Camelot in Saturdays 1,350,000 Investec Derby at Epsom. BUT I still believe theres an outstanding each way bet at a massive price!!!(4.00 BBC and RUK)
There is no doubt Camelot looked absolutely top class when winning the 2,000 guineas and since then the word coming out of Aiden Obriens stable has been very very positive!
Indeed when I was on the Newmarket gallops this week and I took a straw pool of the trainers each and every one of them said the horse to beat in the Derby was Camelot.
In 19 year old jockey Joseph Obrien- the same age as Walter Swinburn when he won the Derby on Shergar in 1981 youve got the coolest guy on the planet and although hes a little bit taller and a little bit heavier than most of his colleagues he reminds me of a young Lester Piggott.
His balance is outstanding and thats what you need to get around those twists and turns and cambers that make Epsom the most difficult racecourse in the world.
Of course Lester always made it look easy and he won 9 Derbys and its interesting that hes come out this week and tipped Camelot.
Bonfire looks a massive danger after powering home on his seasonal debut in the Dante at York and we know he will definitely stay.
Andrew Baldings father won the race with the legend that was Mill Reef and Bonfire has been burning up those famous Kingsclere gallops in much the same way that Mill Reef did.
The difference being that sometimes Bonfire doesnt want to go on the gallops and sometimes you cant get him off but when he gallops boy does he gallop!
I always love a character which is what Bonfire is and if he keeps his mind on the job on Saturday the BBC TV presenter Clare Balding could be interviewing her brother Andrew in the winners enclosure!
Camelot and Bonfire are definitely the form horses but there is a horse around the 50-1 mark that I believe is tremendous each way value and that horse is Rugged Cross.
Trained by Henry Candy remember Time Charter- he is the quiet man of racing , a laid back character who never seems to rush anywhere. But beneath that outer faade is a fiercely determined man who is damn good at his job and in Rugged Cross he has a horse who could spring the ultimate surprise!
A winner at the York August Meeting as a 2 year old and that is good form which ever way you look at it!
He then came out at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago and despite having his first run for over 8 months was only beaten in a 3 way photo by Derby rival Thought Worthy and Frankels full brother Noble Mission.
If thought Worthy is around 16-1 on Saturday then why is Rugged Cross at 50-1 ? It doesnt make sense to me because I believe Rugged Cross will finish in front of the pair this time and the price looks outstanding each way.
This year will be the last covered by BBC and next year it will be back with us on Channel 4 which is great news.
I remember my first Derby as a young TV reporter was the Shergar Derby back in 1981 and the way he won will stay with me at the front of my mind for the rest of my life.
He was awesome and always ran with his tongue out which reminded me of a that great athlete Steve Ovett who would wave to the crowd as he came down the home straight Shergar couldnt wave but he would stick his tongue out!
Ill never forget asking Lester Piggott what that was like riding a record breaking 9th Derby victory on Teenoso,. But just as I asked the question and put the mike up to Lester for the reply a photographers camera flashed, the horse jumped up in fright and all I got was something that sounded like __ _ _ _ off! With millions of viewers watching all around the world Im always eternally grateful for Lesters speech impediment!
Theres certainly nothing like Derby Day and out of all the famous stars Ive interviewed at the track the one I always remembered with affection was the much loved Tommy Steele.
He recounted how as a youngster he used to nick off school to go to Tattenham Corner and because he was so small and couldnt see over the top of the grown ups he would get on his hands and knees and crawl through the legs of the racegoers so he could get to the front and watch the horses galloping past.
And for me theres no doubt the place to watch the Derby is from the Downs in the middle of the course.
Youll find something for everyone on the downs on Derby Day from parties to pickpockets, from open top busses to picnics from the boot and of course theres the live music throughout the afternoon on the big stage.
It is a sporting occasion like nothing else and my advice- whoever covers whether its the BBC or Channel 4 is be there. Experience a day like none other in the world and believe me its an awful lot better if you back the winner! Enjoy!
